Go Have Fun!

Go Out: FAQ

Go Do Things!

  • My grandmother uses a wheelchair most of the time, but she does not let that stop her from living her life. My mom and family have all learned how to transfer her from the wheelchair to the car and now she is always out and about. She goes to movies, to shows, to museums, dinners and more.

  • Mostly anywhere you could ever want to go has some accessibility, such as elevators, ramps, or simply removing a chair so the wheelchair can take its place.

  • If there is no ramp you can buy portable ramps to keep in the car.

  • There have been many times when we all grabbed a corner of her wheelchair and carried her up and down stairs.

  • Don't give up on going out.  Just do it.

Travel!

  • Airlines

    • You can take trips by airlines with a little advanced planning.

    • My grandfather was from Vermont, and we still have a family cabin on a lake.  We have been able to take my grandmother back to Vermont every year since her stroke.  Just make it happen!

    • Most airlines will reserve the bulkhead seats for those with handicaps- but you have to call the airlines directly and try to do this well in advance.

    • When you arrive to the gate remind them you have a handicap traveler so you can get on the plane first and exit last with assistance from the airline who will use an aisle chair to get you on the plane.

    • The airlines will also help you push the wheelchair through the terminal if you need it.

  • Cruises

    • My mom and aunt took my grandmother on an Alaskan Cruise for her 80th Birthday!

    • The cruise line was Holland America and it was very handicap friendly.

    • Again - just do it!
